Allergies: What you need to know to this season
With flu season wrapping up and allergy season well on its way, we here at Mayflower Medical Group want to inform you all about those stubborn allergies. We asked Dr. Symaco, Medical Director at Mayflower Medical Group, to break down what allergies are, how to spot them, and what you can do to avoid symptoms.
What are allergies?
So, what are allergies? What is happening during that allergic reaction process? Allergic reactions are an effect of the body’s immune system having a reaction elicited by foreign substances in the body and these are unique to every individual. Not all allergic reactions are the same and differ on how (the mechanism) and when (the timing of appearance which can be immediate or occurring within an hour of contact with a stimuli or non-immediate which takes up to several months) a reaction is elicited.
Recognizing Allergy Symptoms
If you are familiar with allergies, you may have noticed some common symptoms. They can remain varied and range from overall itching to sometimes the appearance of a rash or swelling in a localized part of the body (eg. Lips, mouth) that were exposed to the allergen.
Alternatively, many have experienced cold-like symptoms. That may be why people often question if it’s a cold vs. allergies. According to Dr. Symaco, you can spot the difference between the two. A cold is a viral infection associated with coughing, sometimes body aches, headaches, and in some cases febrile episodes. Allergies are a more subacute phenomenon (meaning it can be longer in duration sometimes more than two weeks) that can involve nasal congestion, sneezing, post-nasal drip, dry coughing, or even the appearance of rash in some cases. They sound similar but if you cannot differentiate the two you should contact your doctor.
Severe Allergic Reactions
Additionally, Dr. Symaco informs us that on the more severe side symptoms from allergies can approach anaphylactic-like syndrome which can include shortness of breath, chest pain, lightheadedness, or even gastrointestinal issues such as nausea/vomiting and diarrhea. At this point it is advised to seek medical attention.
How long do allergy symptoms last?
There is no timetable for how long allergy symptoms last, and it will vary from person to person, even if it is the same type of allergy. Studies show that symptoms can last between one day to several months. If your symptoms are persistent then consulting with a medical professional will be the best course of action.
Over-the-counter-allergy relief
Finally, we asked Dr. Symaco what is the best over-the-counter medication that one can get for seasonal allergies. He informs us that most over-the-counter medications will run in the same family of antihistamines so it is difficult to determine which is the “best” option. A patient will most likely determine from experience which medication suits him/her. He continues to inform us that prevention and avoidance of allergens are the best ways to avoid the symptoms that accompany them. But how does one know what to avoid? Well allergy specialists can conduct blood or skin tests to know which allergens the patient needs to avoid.
